If you’ve been reading some of my blog posts, you would have noticed I mention taking everything I say into the prayer closet with God and study the word for yourself. In Romans 16:17-20, Paul talks about being cautious when listening to anyone preach the gospel and you shouldn’t take everything at face value. You ought to spend time in the word for yourself and invite God into your quiet time so He can show you.
2 Timothy 2:15, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
We should be spending time with the Father to learn as much as possible because those who teach/preach will have to answer to God when judgment comes. The Bible says we are to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” Matthew 10:16
Spending time with Jesus and establishing your relationship with Him will take some work and sacrifice on our ends. But in order for us to hear Him in our lives, we have to sacrifice ourselves and our flesh in order to get in His presence and hear Him. Here are 5 steps that I believe will help you get into the presence of God.
We all have busy schedules whether you are working a full-time job, starting a business, a student, being a wife and a mother, etc. the list goes on. A lot of times we tend to neglect who blessed us with all that we have. After a long day, we are sometimes too tired to even try and spend time with God so we just put it off. If this were ever you, trust me, you aren’t alone. Being in medical school and an entrepreneur, I also struggled with finding time because I wanted my downtime to be able to relax. But I really had to change the way I viewed it. I needed to sacrifice my time and sleep to spend time with God because I desperately wanted to hear from Him in my life. If I wanted to hear from Him, I needed to make sure that I gave Him some of my time that He blessed me with. That meant I would need to either wake up earlier than usual or stay up later and push past my tiredness to spend time with the Father. We have 24 hours a day for 7 days. That’s 168 hours in a week. We all can find the time, but the true question is what are we willing to sacrifice to spend time to get in His presence?
One important thing to understand when it comes to hearing God’s voice and spending time with Him is that we have to study His word. God speaks to us all the time and we can never say we never hear from Him if we are not in His word. Reading His word is our sword when attacks from the enemy come, and they will come. (I spoke on this in the Spiritual Warfare section of my blog) God also teaches us how to live holy in His word. Like I mentioned before, we can’t take everything anyone says at face value, we need to study for ourselves. Therefore in your quiet time with God, your Bible should be right with you.
This is so vital! Just imagine that you went out with someone trying to have an engaging conversation with them, and they are so distracted by their phone. How would you feel? You pretty much wouldn’t want to talk to them anymore. Distractions do come up when we try to spend time with God. Our phones start ringing, we have to check social media, we all of a sudden feel the need to do laundry. The enemy will try his best to get you out of spending time with Jesus. We have to be able to push past that and be intentional about our time with Jesus. God knows each of our hearts and knows everything about everything we want to talk about so nothing is a surprise to Him. In order to have intimacy with the Father and have Him comfort us, we have to be intentional about the time with have with Him and also be honest about what we are going through.
I feel joy when I worship the Father. Sometimes, when we get in God’s presence, we can be so demanding. We ask God for what we want, thank Him for the materialistic stuff we have, and go about our day and that’s it. God is not a genie so we shouldn’t treat Him as such. The Bible talks about entering His gates with thanksgiving. “Come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God. It is He who made us, and not we ourselves. We are His people and the sheep of His pasture”. Psalms 100: 2-3. There is so much joy in praising Jesus. I’m not saying it’s bad to ask for anything but understand that you are in a relationship with Him, which means He talks back if we would silence ourselves for a moment. I’ll touch more on this in the last tip.
Prayer is our conversation with the Lord. Don’t underestimate how powerful our prayers are. 1 Thessalonians 5:16 says “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Like I mentioned previously, this is a relationship with the Father and He does speak back to us. Prayer changes everything. It can turn our moment of feeling anxious and not knowing what to do into feeling peace and strength that surpasses our understanding. Nothing that we go through is a surprise to God and everything that we pray about, God knows already. Like I said in the previous tip is that God does speak back to us, but oftentimes, we spend our entire prayer just talking and not giving Him a chance to speak back. Sometimes, all it takes is for us to silence ourselves just to hear what God has to spray to us.
I pray these tips to help when it comes to spending time with Jesus. If you have a prayer request, go ahead to our home page-> Resources at the top-> prayer request. Fill out your information and will be praying for you. God bless!
